Scrap metal removal is usually about weight, not volume. An old water heater, a cast-iron radiator or a rusted swing set isn't much to look at, but it's more than one person wants to drag up basement stairs or across a yard. We carry it out, load it and haul it, and the metal goes to recycling, which Massachusetts requires anyway. A pile of mixed junk with metal in it is fine too. Send a photo and you'll have a price before any work starts.

What our scrap metal removal covers

We take household and light commercial scrap: water heaters, cast-iron radiators and old tubs, grills, metal bed frames, file cabinets, metal desks and shelving, exercise equipment, bikes, lawn mowers and tools, swing sets and playsets, aluminum siding and gutters, chain-link fence, metal roofing scraps, and the leftover pipe and wire from a renovation. Washers, dryers and other appliances come too, and our appliance removal page explains those.

Most scrap shows up mixed with other junk: the grill with the patio set, the bed frame with the mattress, the old shelving with everything on it. That's normal. We separate the metal from the rest of the load so it goes to metal recycling instead of the trash.

A few things need prep, and a few we don't take. Run lawn mowers and snowblowers dry or drain the gas, and pull the propane tank off a grill. We don't haul gasoline, propane tanks, oil tanks with oil in them, or other hazardous waste; your town's household hazardous waste day or the store that sold you the tank handles those. Water heaters should be drained and disconnected by your plumber before we arrive.

What this covers

  • Single heavy pieces: water heaters, radiators, cast-iron tubs
  • Yard metal: swing sets, playsets, grills, fencing, old sheds
  • Garage and basement metal: shelving, tools, mowers, bikes, exercise gear
  • Office metal: file cabinets, desks, shelving units
  • Renovation leftovers: pipe, siding, gutters, roofing scraps
  • Mixed loads with metal in them, sorted for you

What’s included

  • A price from your photo or a free on-site estimate, before any work begins
  • Carrying from basements, garages, yards and upper floors
  • Loading and hauling
  • Metal sorted out of the load for recycling, as Massachusetts requires
  • The non-metal junk in the same trip
  • A sweep of the spot where it sat

What scrap metal removal costs

We don't publish a flat scrap price, because one bike in the garage and a basement full of radiators are different jobs. You get an exact price from a photo or a free on-site estimate before we start, and it covers the carry, the haul and the recycling.

What moves the price: weight first, because metal is heavy and cast iron is heavier; then the carry, meaning basement stairs, upper floors and the distance to the truck; then volume and what else is going. Items with refrigerant, like fridges and window air conditioners, cost more to dispose of than plain metal because the refrigerant has to be recovered first.

How to keep it down: do the prep yourself (drained mower, propane tank off, water heater disconnected), clear a path, and put everything that's going in one spot. If your load is mostly metal, say so when you reach out.

How to get rid of scrap metal in Massachusetts and Rhode Island

You can't put scrap metal in the trash in Massachusetts. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are on MassDEP's list of materials banned from disposal, or from being hauled for disposal, under 310 CMR 19.017, and large appliances (white goods) are on the same list. That's why every load we haul gets sorted: the metal goes to recycling, and the rest goes where it's allowed to go.

Your town has options, with limits. Fall River runs a drop-off at its Lewiston Street facility for bulky items, metals, tires and yard waste. Fairhaven takes washers, dryers, water heaters and other white goods at its Arsene Street recycling center, with a yearly sticker, and charges may apply. Those work if you have a truck, the right sticker and a way to lift a water heater into the bed. Most people don't, which is where we come in.

Anything that holds refrigerant is its own case. Under EPA rules, the refrigerant in a fridge, freezer, dehumidifier or window air conditioner has to be recovered before the metal is scrapped, and the scrap yard has to document it. So those go through our appliance removal service and cost more to dispose of than plain metal. Tell us about them in your photo.

Around here, the heaviest scrap is in the oldest houses. Fall River and New Bedford triple-deckers and older Colonials across the region still have cast-iron radiators, old boilers and iron tubs, often in basements with steep, narrow stairs. Tell us the floor and how the stairs run, and we'll plan the carry. In Rhode Island, residents can also bring scrap metal to the Resource Recovery drop-off in Johnston. If it's too heavy to move, we pick up in Rhode Island too.

How it works

  1. 1

    Send a photo

Call or text us a picture of the metal and anything else that's going, the town, and where it sits: basement, garage, yard, upper floor.

  2. 2

    Get your price first

We price from the photo, or come out for a free on-site estimate. You know the exact number before any work begins, with no obligation.

  3. 3

Prep the few things that need it

Drain the gas from mowers, take propane tanks off grills, and have a plumber drain and disconnect a water heater. We book around your day, and same-day pickup happens when the schedule has room.

  4. 4

    We carry it out

The crew does all the lifting, from the basement, the garage or the back of the yard, and loads the truck. You don't move anything first.

  5. 5

    Sort and sweep

We sweep the spot where it sat. The metal goes to scrap metal recycling, and the rest of the load is donated, recycled or disposed of properly.

Scrap Metal Removal questions

Can I throw scrap metal in the trash in Massachusetts?

No. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are banned from disposal in Massachusetts under MassDEP's waste-ban rule, and so are large appliances. Metal has to go to recycling. Your options are your town's transfer station or metal drop-off, usually with a sticker and sometimes a fee, a scrap yard if you can haul it yourself, or a hauler like us who carries it out and sends it to metal recycling.

Is scrap metal pickup free?

Not automatically. Some people expect a hauler to take metal for nothing because it has scrap value, but the carry, the truck and the time cost the same, and a load is rarely all clean metal. Price follows weight, access and volume. Send a photo or book a free on-site estimate and you'll have an exact price before any work begins. If your load is mostly metal, say so when you reach out.

Can you take an old water heater or cast-iron radiator out of the basement?

Yes. Water heaters and cast-iron radiators are some of the heaviest things in a house, and they're usually in a basement or an upper floor of an older home. Have your plumber drain and disconnect the water heater, or the radiator from the heating system, before we come. Then send a photo of the piece and the stairs, and we'll plan the carry and give you the price first.

Do you take grills, lawn mowers and gas cans?

We take grills and lawn mowers, but not the fuel. Take the propane tank off the grill and run the mower dry or drain the gas before we come. We don't haul gasoline, gas cans with fuel in them, propane tanks or other hazardous waste. Your town's household hazardous waste day handles fuels, and the store that sold you the propane tank usually takes it back or swaps it.

Will you take a refrigerator or air conditioner with the scrap?

Yes, through our appliance removal service. Fridges, freezers, dehumidifiers and window air conditioners hold refrigerant, and federal rules require it to be recovered before the metal is scrapped, so they cost more to dispose of than plain metal. Washers, dryers and stoves don't have that step. Include them in your photo and we'll price everything together before any work begins.

Can you take down a metal swing set or shed?

Often, yes. Taking apart a metal swing set, a playset or a small metal shed and hauling the pieces is light demolition, and we price it as its own line. We do non-structural tear-out and haul only. Empty the shed first, or add what's inside to the same job, and send photos of the whole thing.

Do you pick up scrap metal in Rhode Island?

Yes. We pick up scrap metal across Rhode Island as well as the South Shore, Bristol and Plymouth counties and Cape Cod. If you'd rather drop it off yourself, Rhode Island residents can bring scrap metal to the Resource Recovery residential drop-off in Johnston; check its accepted-materials list and hours first. For anything too heavy to lift into a car, send us a photo for a price.
